Another highlight of this tour is the great diversity of tribal ethnic groups. Only in Luang Nam Tha Province, there are 35 different tribal ethnic groups. Beside the stunning mountain views, other natural highlights of this tour are the Nam Ha National Protected area, the lime stone mountains with dozen of caves around Vang Vieng, huge waterfalls and the Nam Ngum Lake with hundreds of islands. From the cultural point of view, Luang Prabang is the absolute highlight of this bicycle tour. This tour starts in the most northern part of Thailand, where 3 days relaxed cycling gives the opportunity for a perfect acclimatization before heading into Laos.

Day 1: arrival in Chiang Rai
After meeting your local agent and guide, you have time to explore the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Rai. Beside interesting temples, you can visit the Hill Tribe Museum and the lively night market. Overnight in a hotel. – B,D –
Day 2: Chiang Rai – Chiang Saen 70/88 km
Leaving Chiang Rai along the bank of the Kok River, you are cycling in north east direction to one of the oldest cities of Thailand, Chiang Saen.
On the way, you can visit a rubber plantation, which is very rare in this part of Thailand. Chiang Saen is located on the banks of the Mekong River and is one of the oldest cities of Thailand and also a former capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Interesting places to visit are the National Museum and the viewpoint of the Triangle which is 8 kilometers from Chiang Saen. Here you can also visit the Opium Museum. Overnight in hotel. – B,D –
Day 3: Chiang Saen – Chiang Khong 68 km
Following the Mekong in Eastern direction, you cycle to the border town of Chiang Khong with great views on the mountain ranges on the Laos side of the Mekong River. On the way, you pass by some interesting temples and hill tribe villages with local markets. Overnight in a guest house. – B,D –
Day 4: Chiang Khong- Xieng Kok (speed boat over the Mekong River)
A spectacular speed boat ride on the Mekong River will bring you in 3 to 4 hours to Xieng Kok, a lively trade centre for Burmese, Chinese and local hill tribes. Overnight in resort. – B,D –
Day 5: Xieng Kok – Muang Sing 72 km
Today, you pass by one of the most remote areas of Laos. Overlooking the peaceful scenery of forest-covered hills, you pass many Akha villages along the way. These Akha villages have had a little contact with the lowland Lao, which is reflected in their traditional clothing. Half way you will pass Muang Long, which has a lively market. After Muang Long, the valley of the Ma River is getting very narrow and the steep mountains come right to the edge of the road. Overnight in a guest house. – B,D –
Day 6: Muang Sing – Luang Nam Tha 60 km
Another beautiful ride through the Na Ha National Protected Area is lying forward. This Protected Area represents one of the most important international wildlife corridors in the region. The dense mountain forest harbor clouded leopard, tiger, elephants, gaur, muntjac and 288 bird species. This area houses also many ethnic groups including Lao Huay, Akha and Khamu. Overnight in guesthouse. – B,D –
Day 7: Luang Nam Tha – Na Teuy 40 km
After visit one of the waterfalls around Luang Nam Tha, you leave the valley over a winding road into the mountains. Although short, this is a demanding ride, mostly up to Na Tuey. Overnight in guesthouse. – B,D –
Day 8: Na Teuy – Oudomxai 80 km
Another great mountain ride with stunning views is on the role. The first stage, until the valley of the Na Xe River, is not so demanding. In the second stage, there’s a long ascent to Ban Nampik, which will be followed by a long descent to Oudomxai with fine views to the surrounding mountains. Overnight in hotel. – B,D –
Day 9: Oudomxai – Nong Khiaw 110 km
A long day of cycling lays ahead of you. After leaving the town, a long but not too steep climb will bring you step wise high into the mountains, where Hmong villages dominating the valleys. Enjoy the great views and the daily life in the Hmong villages who dominating this region. After Song Cha, a long descent will bring you to Pak Mong, which is a good place for a lunch break. From Pak Mong, you cycle over a small tar road into the scenic lime stone mountains who are dominating the area around Nong Khiaw. We stay overnight in a guest house with fine views over the mountains and the Nam Ou River. – B,D –
Day 10: Nong Khiaw – Huai Kan (boat ride) – Luang Prabang 66 km
The day starts with a relaxing 2-3 hours boat ride on the Nam Ou River. Going down stream with fine views over the lime stone mountains, you will ride your bike again from Huai Kan onwards. Following the slightly going up and down road 13, you will cycle to Luang Prabang, the perfect day for some relaxing. Overnight in a comfortable guest house. – B –
Day 11: Luang Prabang – around the valley 30 km
An easy ride to some interesting non-touristy places, you are paddling around the valley of Luang Prabang. Overnight in guest house. – B –
Day 12: Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfall 60 km
A mainly off road ride to the scenic Kuang Si Waterfalls along ethnic villages such as Hmong a Khamu. Enjoy a swim in the clear water basins of the Kuang Si waterfalls. Overnight in a comfortable guest house. – B –
Day 13: Luang Prabang – Kiu Kacham 75 km
Leaving the town in Southern direction, the first 23 kilometers will me a smoothly ride. After Ban Xieng Ngeun, the road is climbing up into the mountains for 15 kilometers. Although some parts are steep, mostly it’s going up by an average of 5 tot 6. On the top of the pass, you will descent to the valley of the Nam Ming River. Here, you can take a rest for the last climb for today, a 20 kilometer long but never steep climb to Kiu Ka Cham which is allocated on an altitude of 1350 meters. Overnight is basic guest house. – B,D –
Day 14: Kiu Kacham – Kasi   95 km
The first part of this stage, you cycle between 1000 and 1400 meters to Phou Khoun. After Phou Khoun a long descent with great views brings you to the valley of Kasi. Overnight in reasonable guest house. – B,D –
Day 15: Kasi – Vang Vieng 58 km
Today, biking goes through amazing scenery and turns slowly into the lowlands along rivers, limestone formations and caves. Overnight in a comfortable resort along the Nam Song River. – B,D –
Day 16: Vang Vieng – Nam Ngum Lake 25/40 km
First, you cross the Nam Song River for a scenic off road ride through lime stone mountains with several caves which are worth a visit. Continuing on the main road, you cycle to the ‘sea of Laos’: The 250 square kilometer artificial Lake Nam Ngum. A 2 hours boat ride brings you to your resort, with stunning views over the Lake. Overnight in resort. – B,D –
Day 17: Nam Ngum Lake – Ban Pako 88 km
In the first part of this stage, you have to climb a few hills that lead into scenic valleys where daily village live can be seen. The last part of this stage will bring you on undiscovered dirt roads to Ban Pako, where you stay overnight in a special location along the Nam Ngum River. Overnight in resort.- B,D –
Day 18: Ban Pako – Vientiane 64 km
Continuing on dirt roads in the first part of this stage, enjoy for the last time the countryside life before entering the capital city of Laos: Vientiane. Along the suburbs, you cycle to the center of the city, situated along the bank of the Mekong. Overnight in comfortable hotel/guest house. – B,D –
Day 19: Vientiane – city ride 15 km
You will end this tour with a ride along the highlight of the capital city: Vat Si Saket, Ho Prakeo, Vat Si Muang, That Luang, Patuxai and finishing at the morning market for the last shopping before going home. Overnight in comfortable hotel/guest house. – B,D –
